Web accessibility audit: automated checks and limits
An accessibility audit identifies obstacles that prevent people from using a website. Automated tests detect some issues, while complete evaluation also requires human checks.
Useful starting checks
Check that meaningful images have appropriate alternatives, form fields have understandable labels and headings organize the content. An attribute's presence does not guarantee its quality: an alternative such as image communicates little useful information. Page structure should support understanding the content and finding important actions.
Keyboard, focus and error messages
A journey should work with a keyboard and make the focus position visible. Review menus, dialogs and focus restoration after closing them. Form errors should explain the problem and be associated with the affected field. Color alone is insufficient to communicate failure. Important dynamic changes should be perceivable through assistive technology.
Worked example: a website address field
An input showing only a gray example URL can lose its identifying cue as soon as a person types. Provide a visible, associated label, explain the expected format and test the accessible name and keyboard access. When validation fails, preserve the input and give a clear explanation. This educational example does not describe a finding from a customer audit.
What automation cannot certify
Markup presence, certain contrast relationships and ARIA associations can be inspected automatically. Alternative-text quality, reading order, understandable instructions and assistive-technology use need appropriate human review. A small number of automated errors does not establish complete WCAG or RGAA conformance.
Use the report to plan improvements
