Website performance audit: understand Core Web Vitals
A performance audit investigates delays in rendering and interaction. Understanding the results requires separating a point-in-time laboratory test from actual visitor experience.
Three dimensions of experience
Core Web Vitals describe loading through LCP, responsiveness through INP and visual stability through CLS. Good-experience thresholds are LCP at most 2.5 seconds, INP at most 200 milliseconds and CLS at most 0.1, assessed at the 75th percentile of eligible visits. A new or lightly visited page may not have enough field data.
Why test results differ
Device, network, region, cache, third-party resources and test timing affect results. A Lighthouse run represents laboratory conditions; it does not prove that every visitor has the same experience. Server response time, image weight and JavaScript are diagnostic clues. None replaces observing the complete page.
Worked example: the main image
When a large image contributes to slow LCP, inspect its displayed size, actual dimensions, compression and network start time. Serve an appropriate format and screen-specific size, reserve its layout space and avoid unnecessarily delaying an immediately visible image. Repeat the test under equivalent conditions. This is an illustrative workflow, not a promised numerical improvement.
Move from score to action
Prioritize landing pages and journeys leading to signup or purchase. Tie each recommendation to a resource or specific observation. Removing unused JavaScript can help; removing an essential integration without testing can break the product. Verify interactions and mobile rendering after a change. Improving speed should preserve useful functionality.
